strawberry problems
« on: May 27, 2011, 13:21 »
Sorry to keep banging on about my strawberry problems! My strawberries are falling off the plants while unripe.  The ones on the ground are speckled - like freckles and today I noticed that several of the unripe fruits have dropped their seeds and these are just lying on the membrane.
I have tried looking up strawberry diseases but nothing seems to fit so would be very grateful for any suggestions?

Have you had hail or very heavy storms where you are. We had one yesterday and today some of the fruits look just as you've described, where the hail has hit the fruit is a brown bruise, and some have been knocked off their stalks

No!  Nothing like that and this has been going on for a few days now.  It is a complete mystery.
Still grateful for any suggestions?

If there is no identifiable disease or pest all I can think of is birds (some refer to them as pests) as they are really looking for food right now and can sometimes damage things :(

They may be overheating if the membrane surrounding them is black.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The strawberry bed is completely covered with a wire cage so no chance of birds.  The strawberries are perfectly formed but white with brown patches and now minus their seeds!
