Urban Reclaimation - Which Veg?
« on: May 27, 2011, 10:22 »
My neighbours and I are reclaiming a little strip of scrap waste land that borders our shared alleyway to the rear of our properties to grow extra veg (we all have tiny gardens!). As it is in an alleyway, it is in partial shade but does get a reasonable amount of light, enough certainly for the weeds and wild plants to flourish without help anyway! The are I have is roughyl 10' by 2' in size. The soil is clay and hard at the moment so we are going to put a raised bed over and turn in some good compost and top soil.

Question is, which veggies? I am of the mind to put some runner beans, some onions and some peas here but I am open to suggestions.......good crops for partially shaded areas...?

Runner beans should do well there as they can grow up towards the light; cut-and-come-again salad mixtures should also do well as they don't like it too hot.

Both are high value crops for the space taken up.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

What about a couple of chard plants. They give a really good return. There's a good string about it on here.
Also, broad beans, they've done really well in a shaded bit of my tiny back garden.
Good luck with your project.

Thanks for replies. I made the raised bed frames today and we divided the plot between us so we each have 11' by 30" of bed. I turned the soill and weeded and tonight am picking up some free top soil and will mix with our own compost tomorrow and turn in. I have also got a couple of runner bean plants lined up for free (my payment for making the raised beds!) and will look for some others as we go on. Would onions take this time of year and would they get on next to runners? Also would peas be worth trying? Was thinking of three small crops and rotating them in the bed, am I on the right track with that?

Wrong time for onion sets but you could sow some spring onions.

You could sow peas but bear in mind they are much less productive than climbing beans and you haven't got much space to play with and given the time of year I would think you need something productive and quick!

It's the wrong time of year for onions, unless you mean spring onions :)
If you like runner beans they really are value for money plants so a good few more of them, sow seeds now, it's not too late :)
Peas do not really give much yield for the amount of space they take, something else may be better value
Salad stuff is always good, when you consider the cost of salad bags in the Supermarkets.
A courgette will give a good yield, as will dwarf french beans.
Someone has already mentioned chard, or spinach, and rocket.

a bit of a repeat :)

Okay thanks again! I think we will go with runners and lettuces then. We mainly grow in pots as we have a tiny yard type garden and we are balancing what we can grow against what we eat and what space we have available and not everything ticks the boxes!!

I don't mind runner beans but we won't eat stacks of them. Spinach might be worth us trying and lettuce is a goer! That'll do us for this year then. Spring onions are a good idea too, thanks!

For peas in a limited space, I would suggest sugar snaps; also green broccoli and caulis.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Beans are said to be unhappy next to onions - I don't know whether spring onions would have the same effect.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
