something to grow stuff in down my allotment
« on: May 25, 2011, 22:36 »
i'm working on a building site at the moment and have found 2 ceramic 'troughs'. they are approx 2 meters in length and a foot deep. inside it slopes from the sides into the middle where there is a plughole.
would this be suitable to grow anything? is there enough drainage?

Put some broken crocks or rocks around the plug hole and they'll be fine to grow all sorts of stuff in. At that size you could grow most veg in them (except exhibition carrots and parsnips)

Hmmm, By your description i'd give them a good wash first  ;)

Should be good for carrots or herbs but like said, put stones or crocks around the plug hole to allow good drainage.

If it's a plastic bath I would definitely drill more drainage holes, as it will be very easy to do. If, however, it's a ceramic bath I'd think twice. You would probably need a special type of drill to cut through the ceramic.
