garlic basal rot disease
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:35 »
I've lost the lot.

It's so annoying - I planted my garlic in November last year and they were doing so well up to about 3 weeks ago when the outer leaves started to yellow. I thought they just needed a feed but the yellowing has continued so I pulled a couple up - the roots are rotting and the bulbs are covered in white fungus.

40 plants gone
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I had some white rot with onions last year and after peeling of the outer layer and chopping the bottom of, I found 80% of each onion was ok to use so I chopped it and froze in batches. Could you do the same with the garlic? It might be a bit of a faff but you then have chopped garlic ready to use - add some olive oil and freeze in ice cube trays perhaps?

thanks for the thought bigben but the bulbs are soft and not really big enough to save. I'll just have to do without garlic this year  :(

I found out I've got this last week. All my shallots died and so far 2 of my garlic have got it. Just watching and waiting for the rest plus all the onions to sucumb. It's so frustating. I took on the plot last year and, I guess as with most allotments, no one could tell me the history of the different beds. White rot persists so long in the soil and now I've given it a new start.  >:(

Perhaps a small raised bed might allow you to grow some of the onion family successfully but you would need to be very careful not to transport the problem from the soil to a compost filled trough / raised-bed.

Alternatively - don't give up but try another area of the plot next time.

luckily, my garlic was all growing in plastic crates so with a bit of luck the contamination should be contained. I will quarantine the soil and find a way of steralizing it before reuse.

It's not just the soil which you need to be careful about.  The pathogen can be carried from your raised beds to other gardening locations on your gloves, boots, trowel etc.  If you're aware of this, and take appropriate hygiene precautions, you should be able to minimise the risk from that side of things.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, I hadn't thought of that.

Now where did I put that nuclear waste contamination suit?  :D
