The easy answer for what to plant is - plant what you want to eat! It seems obvious but when I started I grew loads of stuff that none of us was that bothered about eating just to see if I could get it to grow or because I got the seeds free with a gardening mag.

Also look a bit further ahead,
You want to be looking at getting your winter veg started "now" so that they will be producing in winter.

It will seem complicated at first but it gets easier as you gain experience and the months/years go on.

Like bigben said though, decide what you like to eat and sow/plant/grow that, also experiment with something different every year as you never know, you may find a new favourite veg  ;)

in my opinion potatos and peas are a must
digging up potatos is like a real life treasure hunt in the soil and peas straight off the plant are so sweet and tasty you will be lucky if any make it home

I second only planting what you will eat. Last year I was given a load of broccoli, cabbage and other greens to grow on, we dont eat them! I dont like them, they just attract slugs!
Waste of time and water in my opinion

My eldest daughter was like you SarahJane, she hated stuff like cabbage.  Then my next door neighbour at the time said instead of boiling it in loads of water, just cook it lightly in a little bit of water, just enough so it doesn't burn, then drain well and toss with a little bit of butter and black pepper.  After that she loved it, and in the days she was still talking to me, every time she came to visit, that's the way she had to have her cabbage.

I think the only problem with brassicas, is generally they take up a lot of space.

I'm not growing potatoes this year and someone down the road works in the industry and keeps bringing us more than we can eat! lol

So I'm concentrating my small veg patch with beans, peas, some brassicas, onions, carrots and beetroot.  And the half a polytunnel and greenhouse with chillies/peppers and tomatoes
