insane compost question concerning shredded paper
« on: September 04, 2007, 05:21 »
hi,

is regular paper (not newspaper), shredded, compostable? I mean stuff like paper used for printing stuff with a laser printer. By shredded, I mean it has actually been through a shredder, as opposed to just being torn by hand.

it's a b&w laser, not colour - im fairly sure theres a lot less if any nasties in regular b&w printed paper, but hmmmmm the damn shredder has every kind of paper in it. Prob safer just to go to recycling like it always has.

most inks nowadays are soya based inks, that said they still contain the heavy metals needed to keep them on the paper, the last lot of research i saw on this suggests that most will break down during composting(the heavy metals), they also reckon that there is more in the air pollution. I use loads on the heap, but give it a nitrogen top uop with chicken pellets as the breaking down uses more nitrogen. if that makes sense.

I use loads of it and it seems to be fine.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

... from my office, but I do have quite a large compost heap and it's still quite a small element of the overall mix.

If you are going to be taking paper from a commercial site you do have to get the permission of the business manager/owner to take it off site.
