Really short Dahlias
« on: May 22, 2011, 09:24 »
Hi I am trying my hand at Dahlias for the first time, and I have 3 in a 10" planter. The thing is they are really short, like 2" tall, but they have loads of healthy looking leaves and flower buds. Any others I have seen grow tall, so what's up with mine? There is a pic http://www.daveandbecca.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/dahlia_pot.jpg so you can see what I mean.

Thanks :)

They can vary in size - what does it say on the packet / label? It might be a good idea as it's still early to nip off the flower buds so you get a stronger plant for later.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The label just said Mixed Dahlias. I don't think the plants are weak though, just very short.

They are probably bedding dahlias. Did you buy them as young plants? If so they are grown from seed or cuttings and will not have formed a tuber yet.
