unearthed a pink egg?
« on: May 21, 2011, 19:26 »
Quote
OH finished digging the pond and turned over the ground for another raised bed.

We also dug up a large pink leathery egg!  It was the size of a small goose egg and was pale pink with darker pink spots.  We put it in the waste ground behind the plot (after I finished freaking out a bit).  Any ideas?

Is it animal, vegetable or mineral?
My first thought was a rubber toy or something man-made. How long do you think it's been buried?

Could it be that a rat(s) had stolen a small goose/duck/swan egg and hidden it in the ground?

It could be of great historical interest.  Phone Time Team, the least that would happen is, you'd get your garden dug over ;)

Sounds like a snake egg to me but i dont know of any native snakes that would have eggs that large (grass snakes have eggs to about an inch in size)

It's a pink leather egg. The little pink cows lay them.

Now, where did I put my medication?

lol - no need I'm an archaeologist.  Have never seen this before though and definitely natural rather than man-made.

I think it is likely to be an egg buried by rodents then preserved in the water-logged conditions :)
