Aubergines, pinching out tops?

 Does anyone have any advice about whether to pinch out the top of aubergine plants? I think I read somewhere to pinch out the top of the plants when they get to 9 inches high. Have grown aubergines before but never done this. Wonder what other gardeners think,  am worried about killing off my healthy looking plants!

Thanks, might just leave them alone then. Have always kept them in the conservatory before but this year am putting quite a few in raised bed on allotment for first time, have grown quite a few plants so prepared to lose some!
