Parsnip roots
« on: May 20, 2011, 19:10 »
Hi its me again,
ok i have my parsnips all growing well in toilet roll tubes and it took a while for them to germinate.
i pricked of the weak ones so it was one a tube.
i thought when they get first true leaves pop them in their final position but today i saw the first with the leaves starting so i thought id look under the roll to make sure the root isn't showing and OMG the root was there and wrapped around the base of the tube several inches long.
will this cause issues when planting out?
i have them in the coldframe now to harden off.
do i attempt to straighten out the root when planting?

I think you will cause more harm than good if you try to straighen the roots, as it is too late now to start a new batch I would pop them in and see what happens, you may have a bent root at the end but you will still get enough usable root from the plants to make it worth while.
