where/when to buy Family apple tree

A friend will be celebrating his 40th birthday next month, and we thought he'd appreciate a small family apple tree.  Can anyone tell me if it's the wrong time to buy, or would a different fruit be available at this time of year.  Where would best place be to buy.  .  Its a question of "what do you buy a man that has everything"    He is now into his 2nd year with an allotment. Any idea's would be appreciated.

we just bought pot grown ones from lidl..on dwarf root stock...look really healthy too

Nope just a choice of different varieties

I like the look of those 3 type ones but haven't found them in my budget recently

After having trawled the internet, I've just about given up hope, as nearly all are recommending from November onwards. 

I do believe that's what the first reply said!

How about suggesting your friend grafts their own Family Tree?

You can buy Scion wood (next spring), and graft onto a suitable rootstock (which could be planted this Autumn). So your present could be a bit of a "project", although you'll have to give an I.O.U. for now!
