Onion Cises
« on: May 20, 2011, 12:51 »
Help ! I have dug up my white and red onions to move away from peas as planted by mistake too close and the bulbs are full of white maggots. I am absolutely gutted as I grew them successfully last year with no problem. I have pulled them all, killed what maggots I can see and put the bulbs in a bucket of water to stand for a while in the hope of killing all of them. I will then plant them in a container away from the infected soil.

Am I doing the right thing and what are these things ?

Well I did drown the beggers so will re-plant them elsewhere in a container.

If they've bored into the bulb, it'll just rot now.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could try growing them under fleece or enviromesh to stop the fly getting near them.

I forgot to mention that they don't generally bother onions grown from sets only those grown from seed.

My red onions from sets were full of them, even in the seed trays with a tiny bit of soil as well as the small pots. The white onions were from seed. I found an onion fly and killed it so hopefully this may have been the culprit.

Bean seed fly can also infest onions in a similar way. Aparently bean seed flies and are often the culprit when onion fly is blamed. Onion fly infestations are aparently not very common.

Bean seed flies lay their eggs in freshly moved organic matter, such as compost. They usually feed on organic matter but can attack beans, onions and several other crops.

Your sets may have contained onion fly pupae which hatched and laid eggs or you were unlucky and the fly, onion or bean seed , found its way into your greenhouse.

As Sally has said, it is unusual to have an infestation in sets that damages the plants.

The Broad Beans look fine. I will keep the onions in pots in the greenhouse. Some of the roots were packed with the maggots. It was quite shocking really.
