Attack of the Killer Slugs!
« on: May 19, 2011, 16:14 »
I've noticed a few of my potato leaves and strawberry leaves have started to get holes in them, I'm guess from slugs.

They previously had a good munch on quite a few of the daffs.

What should I use to hold back the slimey hoard? I'm concerned that if I put down any pellets that they might affect my taters/strawbs.

We have put flat stones in our raised beds. In the morning, you lift up the stones and find the slugs lurking there, underneath the stones, and you can dispose of them as you see fit. Simple and effective!

I am often prone to wandering around the garden in the evening wearing a head torch and armed with a trowel splatting slugs and snail.

Then compost any evidence the next day!

OH gets concerned by the times I come in with a score sheet!, but does help release tension after a long day!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I don't believe in killing 'em  ::)  So I sometimes collect the slugs and snails in a pot and release them elsewhere  :D

One of my favourite pastimes on a damp summer evening. The back garden becomes alive with them, and I even find them above my head, amongst the plants on the pergola.

One of my son`s townie girlfriends saw me metering out instant justice once, and refused to speak to me afterwards. Thankfully they are no longer an item.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

We have always been plagued by slugs and snails to the point where we couldn't walk without standing on them but something happened, don't know what, because last year there were hardly any :D  Hope it's the same this year.

I am hopeing the really cold November we had followed by the hot dry start to the year will set numbers back a bit. I have not noticed as many slugs or snails this year.

I use up ended grapefruit halves which I collect after breakfast. The slugs and snails shelter under them and van be easily disposed of the next day. They also look quite colorful and attract comment!

For my most precious plants I use copper rings. They work superbly but are £££. My family have started giving them to be as presents (great gift) and I am gradually able to protect more and more of my plants.

Snails have a good homing instinct so it is of no use throwing over the fence as they will come back, not sure about slugs.

I put mine in my compost bin and let them help me for a change.
