Pluot fruiting
« on: May 18, 2011, 19:14 »
My pluot (plum-apricot cross) has set fruit for the first time this year, two years since planting. It is always exciting with a new fruit!!
It is absolutely hardy having easily survived the last two Winters. It flowers very early, about two weeks before the plums.
It is proving rather vigorous, needing a lot of pruning on the supplied rootstock St Julian.
Is anyone else growing this fruit and how reliable have you found it?

I have not tasted it, but the catalog claims that it is much sweeter than a plum.

I have now harvested my pluots, several weeks before my Victoria plums. Pluots will ripen mid-August in Glasgow, so possibly earlier in the South of the UK. The individual fruits are about 4.5 cm in diameter, heart shaped with deep reddish-purple skin and flesh. The intense taste is a very sweet combination of plum with a hint of apricot.
I am amazed that the tree has fruited in only 2 years, even if it was only a few fruits.
Is anybody else growing a pluot and has it fruited yet for you?
