Laying outside nest box?
« on: May 17, 2011, 18:18 »
Rose (pekin) has occasionally laid an egg outside the nest box.  She was 1st to starting lying (in the box) but now and again I would find 1 in the run.  Yesterday she left 1 in the middle of the garden (broken) and today she left 1 in the run again.  I have 3 chooks and only 2 are laying.  There are 2 nest boxes so plenty of room.  Anyone got any idea why she would drop one outside when she has been sitting in the box?  No RM problem by the way and box cleaned out every week so don't know why this is happening.  :(

My Ranger will never lay in the nest box, never has she has only been laying 4 weeks but i get one every day without fail, she has made her own nest at the back of the wood where she like's to lay her egg, it's strange as my other 3 all lay in the same nest box except her...
At least i know where she is laying them, sorry i have no answers for you but i'm sure the others will have lots of advice for you...
Good luck   :)

i agree with wayne, place a golf ball or rubber eggs/china eggs in the nest box. it kind of traines them were to lay.  it can take a few days or a week or two.  just gives them an idea were they are ment to lay.

all the best :D

I wonder if you could have an egg thief, Jamima?  crow, rat or squirrel for example.

She usually lays in the box, so she knows what she is supposed to do.  Laid 1 there today.  Just don't understand why now again she drops 1 outside.
