Mealworms and Wax worms
« on: May 17, 2011, 16:20 »
My girls love mealworms - i have only given them dried mealworms so far. I had Lizards a few years back and used to feed them waxworms, can these be fed to chickens and would i have to remove the heads as you do with reptiles?

Also has anyone tried breeding their own mealworms/waxworms? I have heard its quite easy if you have the patience?  ???
love my chickens me! :-)

I did see a forum thread about mating mealworms, I'll have a play with the search and see if I can find it again.

Found it, it was off Lewjam, made me laugh and very informative.

"When a mummy meal worm and a daddy meal worm love each other very much, they have a special cuddle and baby meal worms are born!

hehe

It really is as simple as you like - get a tub,(size depending on how many you want to breed) put an inch orso or porridge oats, crumbled up dry food (dog biscuits/cornflakes etc etc)

Add a few egg boxes turned upside down (for the baby meal bugs to hide in)

Buy some live meal worms and put them in the box

Leave them alone for a while.

When you get bugs, put some stale bread (or something similar) in, the bugs will lay eggs on the bread and loads more worms will arrive.

Take out the dead adult bugs and feed them to your chooks, and wait for the worms to grow up.

Take what you need and leave some to mature to carry on your little meal flock hehe"

Good luck

 brilliant - i'll have a go i think! i'll have to hide them from the hubby, he's a bit squeamish about worms n stuff, plus he says i'm not allowed to have anymore pets - erm, mealworms are hardly pets, but hey ho!

Thanks Christine

My husband has a fur allergy and so when our cat died 3 years ago I was band from having pets, he's not allergic to feathers though  :D :D :D

So three chickens later, I think I'd be pushing it too to start breeding meal worms. I'd be interested to hear how you get on though. It would be a lovely treat for the girls.

i tried breeding my own mealworms, i got as far as raising them into beetles, or whatever they're called, but no further. the whole thing was terribly long-winded. i just dig them up the occasional worm these days.
