parsnip madness
« on: May 17, 2011, 10:05 »
I hoed my rows of parsnips before they'd germinated and a few of have genrminated in random places.

Is it too late for another sowing? It says mid-May on the packet so I'm going to do it anyway, just wondered what you all thought.

What about starting them in paper pots or loo roll tubes and using them to fill the gaps caused by your hoeing?

There's only a few that have germinated really. probably about 10.

I guess I'll start again and just accept smaller roots this year.

I like the idea of starting them off though as I guess I can hurry the germination along a bit.

Thanks - it's always best to ask!

If you pre-chitt some in damp kitchen paper in the airing cupboard in a plastic box they will germinate in less than a week, you can then fill in the gaps.

I will do this, sounds like a great idea.

Does it work with everything?

Pretty much, but for many things its not worth it - 'coz they germinate like weeds anyway!

I chit Parsnips, Climbing French and Runner beans, Sweetcorn, and seeds that are really hard to grow (which doesn't include any vegetables)

I have tried all sorts of methods over the years of growing snips and he one I can fully endorce is sowing them in toilet tubes in a cold greenhouse. As soon as the seed germinate harden them off and get them planted out before the tap root is visable at the bottom of the toilet tube. I have used this method for the last 5 years and apart from the first year when I let the roots get too long (resulted in stunted odd shaped snips, still edible though) I have had complete rows of beutifull shaped snips.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Totally agree,

Until i used this method i got very poor if any germination and even then it was a battle against the weeds to stop them swamping the emerged seedlings.

This is the only method i use now.
