Dwarf French Bean - Possible problems?
« on: May 15, 2011, 14:44 »
Hi Folks,

Hope your all well and glad of some rain  :)

I am not sure if I have got problems with my green beans. Some seem to be ok where as others seem to be really struggling.

I planted them in truggs with short canes for support.

Have attached a pic so hopefully someone can cast their eyes over it and tell me if I have a problem or I am just fretting for no reason.

Cheers

has it been cold and/or windy where you are?

Having your location in your profile would help  ;)

They don't like the cold very much. Here, in Scotland, we have had varying levels of success depending on the temperatures...

Mum - I am a bloke so doing things sensible does not come easy  lol. I have updated it but I live on the outskirts of Leicester.

I assumed it would be sheltered as its next to a fence but it does get windy at times.  The Garden Peas are doing very well.

It has not been that cold.

Are the bases of the stems black and rotten?  Some of the leaf marks might just be sunscorch.  Any chance of a close up?

peas are tolerant of cold weather, beans are not. It has still been down to 5C here at night, so I imagine you'd be as cold....and they don't really like temps that low :(

I'm very adjacent and wouldn't think about planting out until June. I only sowed my seed two days ago.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Are there drainage holes in the bottom of the trugs?  In addition to the low temps, poor drainage won't make them any happier.

My beans often sulk after planting out, so it may just be that - but keep a close eye on them if temps overnight are due to be below about 10 degrees C, and fleece them or cover them in newspaper etc overnight if temps are due to drop.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi again,

Thanks for all your comments.

i have attached 2 pictures.  The first one is of probably the worst looking plants, the second being some that look fairly healthy.

Thanks

I think temprature and the weather may be an issue, I'm not that far from you and we have had hail showers over the last few days.

The other issue may be your compost. I have sown beans in some on special offer from Sainsburys, and the beans are very week. I have ended up putting the compost into the compost bin as it was very woody and magpie mushrooms were growing out of my pots. :(

You still haven't told us if your trugs have drainage holes. Beans hate swampy feet and could possibly be a problem here.

Hi,

Sorry not been on to answer the replies.

I thought I had made big enough holes in the bottom of the truggs.

After all your advise, I think it is the cold more than anything else.  There is a slight recovery on the plants so hopefully I will get some crop :-)

Cheers
