A little concerned, advice needed please.
« on: May 14, 2011, 20:46 »
I bought 6 lovely POL Maran girls in the Spring and slowly integrated them into my main flock. They have settled in beautifully and laid well for the past month or so. One of these girls has started to spend a great deal of time during the day in the hen house on one of the high perches. She is certainly not broody. She comes out first thing for food and seems to be well physically. I haven't noticed any bullying but then she is inside all the time so no one is near her. Any ideas what's going on?

could be bullying, have you tried closing the coop up to see what happens? make sure you have several feeders and drinkers available to her.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hello Joyful. I really don't think it's bullying as the whole flock free ranges a huge field and there are plenty of feeders and water available to all of the birds. The problem of closing the house up is that there would be a Que. a mile long in half an hour crossing their legs to keep their eggs in.

Could she be having problems laying? Do you know when she last laid? Maybe you could isolate her for a day or two with just another one or two for company and see how she is?
Hope it's nothing worrisome.

Is staying in the house the only sign that something is not right?  One of my Barred Rocks (Elsie) is a bit of a loner.  If any of the others get seperated from the flock they call out and make a fuss, but Elsie can often be found under a tree or around a corner or in a completely different part of the garden away from the rest of them.  She just seems to like her own company.  :)

I hope it's the same with your girl and that it's nothing to worry about.
