Tiny leeks & onions
« on: May 12, 2011, 22:35 »
I sowed the seeds on 22nd March - Musselburgh leeks, Red Baron and Ailsa Craig onions. They took about three weeks to come through but, after a month of growing, they're still tiny - just little green strands.

Is this normal? I've never grown leeks or onions before. I'm just finding it really hard to believe they're ever going to reach edible proportions. All the books say you transplant leeks when they reach the thickness of a pencil, but mine aren't even the thickness of a pencil lead!

My leeks (also Musselburgh) are still pretty small, but my Ailsa Craig and assorted other onions sown from seed (Globo, Bedfordshire Champion and Hytech) started to get considerably bigger when I gave them a bit more room. They're now transplanted into the allotment, so we'll have to see how they do. I'm going to give the leeks a lot more time - there's no real hurry to plant them out, I don't think.

My Musselburgh leeks are still puny and I sowed them a while ago. I potted them on today into a soil based compost but I put them in a big tub til they're big enough to be transplanted onto the plot.
