Soil is quite clay. Tiny sprinkling of blood & bone mixed into soil and compost mixed in.

I sympathise I've killed so many strawberry plants its not funny any more.

Some die back of the leaves is normal, how old are they ? If they're this years plants were they hardened off before you planted then.

If the plants have been newly planted this year then die back of the original leaves sometimes happens as the plant adjusts to local conditions (changes in light and moisture levels for example) and it throws out new leaves adpated to the new conditions.

The soil looks very dry.. if you scrape down six inches is there much moisture?

Is there any chance they could have been affected by spray drift from weedkiller in the area (could have been any time in the past few weeks if it was glyphosate-based?)

The picture of the whole bed is a bit too small to see much; is there any pattern of damage across the bed or is it completely random?

First picture does suggest the plant is a bit too deep in the soil, although I wouldn't have expected that to cause the sort of die-back you seem to have with yours.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

The brown leaves look like leftovers from last year. Normally after fruiting, old foliage is cut off so the new can sprout through. Best to cut it off now and water the plants well. Even strawberries can struggle through dry spells. Don't feed as it will make berries go soft and mold quick.

The new growth looks fine, so I'd just pick the old leaves off and leave the plants to grow.
Make sure they never dry out completely though, and if they are new plants...........
then pick all the flowers/fruit off this year.
It's sad but will give you stronger plants for next year  :)

They've been hardened off, always keep the soil moist, havn't used anything toxic next to them.   I thought maybe it maybe a case of overwatering as it's clay soil so drainage isn't the best so may be being suffocated.  Think the soil's just dodo so might transplant them into pots or different bed.

I agree with Mumofstig, most of my plants had leaves like this which I removed from the plants and now have lush green foliage. Yours look like they have plenty of good growth coming through so I wouldn't worry just yet.....good luck!

There's not that much new growth coming through.  I've grew strawbs before and they've never looked this bad.

You've had in the region of 10 different responses and suggestions already, I think we've exhausted all the options.
