ive just sown some here in somerset and they're in the warm.  I went to barrington court (NT) today
 http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-barringtoncourt/w-barrington_court-explore_estate.htm

They had a lot of squash /courgette/ pumpkin stylee plants out in their walled veg garden.
The plants were up to a foot high too but i suppose its very sheltered

The larger of my pumpkins and squash are going to spend their first night outside of the coldframe tonight. Overnight temps in London are predicted to be 10 - 11 degrees. Seems like a good night to start the hardening process, now the wind has eased a bit.... :)

Ours are both (two types of each) thoroughly hardened off in pots. They will be getting planted out this weekend or going in the compost if the wind doesn't calm down as they will just get shredded as some other plants already have been.

I'm not growing squash, but my Courgettes and Pumpkins went in 2 weeks ago, first 4/5 days covered with mini polytunnel.

I think I must regard myself as a traditionalist  it is a rotational thing, squash and courgettes get sown after beans and sweetcorn. Done, germinated, growing in pots, but not yet set out until conditions improve. Damn its hard to let them go :(

My squash and courgettes will get sown this weekend.
I have enough to do keeping established plants, young plants and seedlings alive in these abnormal conditions (well in the Sahara/southeast of england anyway).
Judging by the amount of questions on this site about the effect of sun and wind burnt plants; putting out young plants in what I consider unsuitable conditions here is decidedly risky.

As a newbie in this matter I have seriously messed up having planted mine out last week before major winds 100mph gusts  in Glasgow, heavy rain and hailstones. I ventured up today and they all looked kind of dead. I am hoping (optimistic) that they are still alive and can survive. If not, I've learned something I guess.
Keep digging!

Guday,

I live in the North east of England and wanted to grow Butternut Squash - Soup is what i live on !!!!

This site helped me a lot whilst growing it as i did start to grow too early so i left in green house until about 5 weeks ago.

HOWEVER, i built a cold frame to protect them, it has sides on and the top / lid / roof is on hinges. I open and close regularly.

I water around the base of the plants often and the are growing well - 1 is around the size of a large pear at present.

Because i live in the North I'm going to keep mine protected in the cold frame i think.

Cheers and good luck
Keith

I hate to crow, but   :tongue2:  we are hoping to eat one of ours, if not two (!) this weekend.  All plants doing really well so far  :D in large planters with wicker crates around, so protected a bit from the wind..  Squash a little behind, but I can wait   :D

Not the bit of Hampshire we live in  :( and we're south(ish) of Southampton too.

Our garden's terribly cold, and we had a frost the other night!

We're rapidly running out of space and have had to put some things into the ground. Everything's heavily fleeced or covered with cloches in the hope that they'll get enough protection from the low overnight temperatures, but our squash, cucumbers and courgettes are still in the cold frame.

My courgettes have been flowering for at least a couple of weeks now, but all they seem to be growing is male flowers. And that's six plants, all with male only flowers - is that sexist or what?
