Maincrop carrot with fly resistance?
« on: May 10, 2011, 20:28 »
last year i grew early nantes in a drum 3 feet high and autumn king in drums about 2'6" high. the nantes were fine , absolutely flawless, but the autumn king were riddled with fly  >:(. i have read today that autumn king are probably the most susceptible of all carrots to fly  ::). i was planning to grow them this year about a  metre off the ground but now not sure. is there a fly resistant variety available that will stay in the ground as long as autumn king as i want to pick them fresh on Christmas day?

many thanks for replies

There are no varieties which are guaranteed not to be affected by carrot fly, I think.  Your best bet is to choose an appropriate variety which will last until the end of the year (the C word is banned here until December  ;) :D ), and cover with enviromesh or similarly small mesh to prevent the fly getting through.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Last year Enviromesh was the only thing that kept my carrots free of the ***.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Have you tried Resistafly?  It's a Nantes variety that will crop in december.
