Damaged Strawberries
« on: May 10, 2011, 14:28 »
Hi All

I have a lovely crop of strawberries however something is eating them - I tidied the bed yesterday fresh straw slug pellets and netting.  Had a quick look today and I've not lost  many however something is still attacking them my question is - if its only slightly damaged is it safe to cut the damaged part off and eat the remainder - at this rate I may not end up with anything!!

Thanks
Missy

I find that birds, squirrels, chipmunks, slugs and mice like to feast on my strawberries. And yes, I usually cut away the chewed parts so that I can have something left. This year I'm netting mine which should deter the biggest of the pests. I'd still put down slug pellets though since they can crawl under/through netting.

If it is birds causing the damage its said that if you paint some strawberry size pebbles red and place then around the perimeter of said strawb bed that the birds soon get fed up nearly smashing their beaks on the hard stone and move onto your neighbours strawb bed.  :D :D :D
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
