Beetroot - to transplant or not to transplant?
« on: May 10, 2011, 13:40 »
I'm getting conflicting advise on growing beetroot. The seed packet says to transplant to 6" apart once big enough whereas I've also read that you should plant the seeds in their final cropping positions.
Any advise?

I have seen articles that recommend both ways - if you transplant you will need to be very careful and minimise any root disturbance (i assume) as it is a root veg.  I have sown some direct and am giving transplants a go too this year.

The seeds are nice and big so it's easy to plant them singly and not have to thin too much.

I usually plant them at about 3 inches each way and then thin them when they're small so you get some baby beets while you wait for the others to get big.

Just keep the bed moist and they'll germinate nicely in place.

I used to transplant beets but found the transplanted ones didn't do as well as the ones left in place, so I stopped. Now I just sow thinly and leave them. As they grow, I picked the largest in each cluster and its worked well.  I wonder if the instructions mean that if you've sown into modules, it's time to transplant the modules outside? Incorrect wording if anything.

I did both last year and had great success with both so am trying it again this year. Belt and braces sort of thing  :)  Mine are in those small square pots at the moment and nearly ready for planting out

I'm starting them off in modules this year because the ground on the plot was so hard and dry when I wanted to start them off.  They still haven't poked through the compost so we'll see if they are going to do anything much (they may be old seed).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'm doing an experiment this year. Some sown direct, the others I have sown 3 or 4 to a module and have been planted out all together about 8 inches apart. They should push each other apart as they grow - similar to how some people sow and plant seed onions.

I use both methods, and both methods work well, I use modules first as I find I can get an earlier beetroot by sowing under glass, then after the soil has warmed up a bit I revert back to the traditional way of sowing them.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
