Beetroot Survives Washing Machine Blast
« on: May 10, 2011, 07:15 »
That's right.  A couple of weeks ago I found a white barely discernable seed packet coming out in the pocket of my combats after a wash.  Oh, well, I was wondering where they got to I thought on realising it was our lost beetroot seeds.  We've got a spare tray so we popped them in there under some compost for the hell of it and lo and behold.  Up they're popping already.. and... doing better than the ones we put straight in the ground!!

I am now tempted to try this as my germination rate for beetroot is pretty abysmal!

Wanders off to find dirty jeans......
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I hope you like white beetroot with an unusually clean and fragrant taste!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

There is some logic in this. Many growers soak beet seed before they sow. Growers of mangolds and sugar beet always used to submerge their bag of seed in a dyke for couple of days.

The science behind this is that the corky coating contains inhibitors which stop the seeds germinating without plenty of moisture. Soaking, or in your case a good wash and spin, removes these and allows the seeds to germinate more quickly.

I presume they were on a cool wash cycle? Too hot and they would cook.

Not wanting purple clothes, I prefer to seed my beets outside and water every 2nd day. Makes for better wardrobe choices
