growing raspberries
« on: May 09, 2011, 14:45 »
my question is i have Raspberries growing and some of the canes have fruit beginning to develop.  There are new canes coming through which dont look like they will bear any fruit.  Are these suckers or next years canes?  If suckers should i cut them out as they will probably take all the energy from the developing fruit canes.  Advice please.
thanks

If they are summer fruiting raspberries, which it sounds like they are, then the new shoots are next years canes.  Leave them be if theyre where you want them and tie them in if they get tall  :)

Assuming they are summer fruiting raspberries these new canes will carry next year's crop so let them grow! (If they are actually autumn-fruiters which are fruiting on canes not cut back last year then still let them grow; they will bear the main crop later this year.)

You can remove any new shoots which appear away from the parent plant unless you actually do want to increase your stock.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
