Mr Fothergil's Strawberry Plants
« on: May 09, 2011, 13:36 »
My bargain order of 24 plants have arrived this morning.  I am not ableto get the lotty until Sunday and then I need to prepare the bed.

What is best to do with them in the meantime.  I thought pot them, maybe in the Richies Paper pots until the bed in ready.

Cheers

I would have thought that paper pot would be a bit narrow, but could work in a pinch.

How long are they going to be hanging around, if its a couple of weeks do you have anything around 4" - 6" that you could use?

Well Lardman, at least until Sunday, but haven't looked around, I think as they are so small and weedy, I think I'll put them in some big pots like you said with some fruit mirclegrow compost and let them establish a bit before planting on the lotty, does that sound OK?

How big are they?  You don't want to put them in pots which are too big, or they won't thrive (and you'll spend more on compost than you need to!).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you are going to put them in on sunday, wrap them in damp newspaper and keep somewhere cool and dark.

Yorkie, they are tiny, just small crown with roots and a couple of browny/greeny leaves on top.

The most important thing is that the roots are kept moist at all times.

They will probably be OK wrapped in moist newspaper but that does run the risk of there being air pockets, and it's nearly a week for these tiny plants to survive.  If the roots dry out at all then the plant will probably not survive.

I'd put them into 3" or 4" pots until they are ready to be planted out.  Gives you a bit more leeway in preparing the soil ready for them too, so you don't have to do it at this weekend if for any reason you can't.

Hi  my plants arrived 2 weeks ago and were put into 3" pots and now have 4 leaves each and roots through the bottom - about ready to plant on.

Thanks all...

Greenhead - I take it you put 1 plant in each pot?

As other have said if its only until Sunday don't waste time potting them up just keep the roots damp.

Mine arrived about 2 weeks ago and went into 6" pots and 3 to a large trough. They will live there for the rest of the season though.

You'll be surprised how quickly they grow.

Lardman

That looks better - I would feel happier planted them out when they look like that so I i'll put them in pots and troughs I have, for a couple of weeks until established a bit.

Ta very muchly

Rick
