Tomatoes from Compost
« on: May 08, 2011, 20:55 »
Earlier in the year I spread plenty of home made compost on the veg beds and due to the lack of heat in the compost heap it did not kill everything off. I have now a number of tomato plats growing quite happily.

Is t worth keeping them ? is there any chance of them producing fruit ? i have no idea what type they will be.

Thanks

Phil

I should think they will become proper plants, yes.  However, I would want to move them so as not to muck up my rotation plans.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

they will grow and fruit, but as you say - you don't know what they will taste like.

Did you grow tomatoes yourself last year, or have they grown from supermarket toms that have been thrown away? That might help you decide whether it is worth growing them or not

Thanks for the very quick replies, they are most probably from supermarket tomatoes, I did grow some last year but so few ripened they were all eaten.

I will move them somewhere out of the way and let them get on with it.

Cheers again

Hi
I have had tomato plants grow in my polytunnel which I assume is from seed if tomatoes that I don't pick and rots down. (my household compost was not used there)
These tomatos (when I grow them on) do not taste like any of the varieties that I grow!!! they are much worse than the varieties that I grow.

In short I would take them out and add the plants to next years compost.
