How many toms' in an 8x4 GH?
« on: May 07, 2011, 21:42 »

We've finally glazed/perspexed the 8x4 greenhouse that is on our plot :D,
and was now wondering how many tomato and pepper plants you should put in this size 'house without overcrowding it??

Will the mixture of glass and perspex affect the temperature and the light etc??

If I had taken a picture, I think you would say we've been via 'steptoe and sons' yard!   ::)

door in the short side? then 5 toms down the long side and one at the end opposite the door, possible a couple peppers in pots there as well (they don't usually grow as big)

door in a long side? then 5 along the back and 1 either side of the door, you'll probably manage a few peppers in pots either side of the door as well  :)

I must admit that I put in loads more in my plastic 6' x 4' greenhouse.  I put mine in pots in 2 offset rows down each side from memory about 11 either side and 5 cucumbers at the end.  There isn't much room down the middle but I haven't had any blight problems in the past (!!!!).  The pots next to the plastic sides are in big pots and the second row are in smaller but quite deep pots so that they fit closely to the "big" ones without taking up too much room.

I have an 8 x 6 G/H and in the past have crammed my Toms in.

But now I plant 2 Shirley F1 down each side, 2 Brandywine at the end and a Chilli plant at the end in between the Brandywines. Making 7 plants in all, with French Marigold planted underneath to keep the white fly away (fingers crossed)

Planting more Toms than this means that I have more Toms than I can use , store or give away. This year is the 1st that I have used this spacing so will see how I go on.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Anything between 8 and 12 along one glass wall here. (8' long), planted 'Tom Tiddle'r fashion in a double row about 18" wide.

Usually works, (been doing it for 15 years) and they're always planted in 7"-8" pots, and stood in long trays so watering, feeding etc is easier.

Stop them when they reach the roof, as the top truss rarely does anything useful, except perhaps add a bit of shade for the cucumbers, which are on the North side.

I've heard that the two shouldn't be put in the same greenhouse, but up to now, there's never been a problem...

And Mrs Growster also cultivates several chilli plants along the end, and on the staging (two levels)

if it's a 4ft wide greenhouse, and you plant a double row(2 x 18in) each side (or have staging on the other side)

How on earth do you walk down the 12ins left for a path in the middle?.....
and I though that I crammed things in

I squeeze six plants in a 8ft length and thin the leaves a lot but 5 would probably be better spaced.
Out of the 12 plants i have 2 cherry 2 beef and 8 plum for cooking/freezing.
With 2ft more width than you i can also shoehorn in a cuc. :)
