Runner Beans - Recommendations?
« on: May 06, 2011, 14:59 »
Popped into garden centre for some runner beans and was amazed by choice available. So.....I thought before I buy I would ask on here for any recommendations.
I liked the look of one called Polestar it is a stringless variety which crops well into Autumn. Has anyone grown this variety or any other thoughts on Beans  :)

BTW....my first lot of beans got devoured by slugs  >:(
Hence need to get some more in quickly.

I always grow these (plus another variety in case there's something better out there). As yet I have never found anything with as nice taste, such a high yield, the birds leave alone and that aren't stringy.

They sound perfect - wonder if I can get them in Garden centre/nursery or will I have to send off for them. Have also just been told that White Lady & Polestar are good. Now all I need is some good french beans. Ruddy snails/slugs

I have no clue what variety mine are. I have used the seed my mum gave me, which she got off her dad when she started growing veg (about 40 odd yrs ago) and i have no clue where he got the seed from. Simple red flowers mid/pale green pod which gorw to about 12 inches, never noticed any disease or problems but they do seem to be more prone to aphid than other varieties on the plots around me i have noticed.
Oh yeah they taste out of the WORLD too!
Kate
Always thankful for advice!
