Moving Garlic.
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:29 »
I put some garlic in the back garden last November and it is doing well but now I`ve got my allotment "The Lady of the House" want`s a "Nice Lawn" out back and is demanding that I shift the garlic. Will it survive the move? It will only be out of the ground for about an hour.

I would put my foot down but I`m not that brave. ;)
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.

Oh dear Tom! ::) I wouldn't like to jeopardise your whole crop by saying yes they'll be fine, but my OH found some unidentified bulbs* when he was preparing an area of ground and turfed them out where they lay around for a while before he bunged them (literally as he thought they might be the bluebell bane of his life :D) in elsewhere. They have recently identified themselves as garlic growing and developing very happily. :)

*They were obviously some of the autumn planted bulbs which were excess to the main bed and didn't get marked where they were put. :D

all you can do is dig them up with a spadeful of root with soil attached if poss.
Water in well and keep your fingers crossed  ::)

I agree with Mum! (Not the best thing to have to do but better than divorce)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sorry to be devils advocate but.........................

Can't you leave them for another couple of months? Then they will be out the ground for good. Trying to get a lawn to grow in this hot dry weather will be an uphill struggle, you'd be better waiting until the autumn I would have thought to give the 'Nice Lawn' the best possible chance in life.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

^^This would be my first thought. Are you on a water meter? I can't imagine how much extra it would cost to keep a new lawn (turf or seed) alive during the current dry spell

She Who Must Be Obeyed has spoken and Tom has no choice  :D

Yes, the garlic will move okay at this point as I've just moved some I missed last summer. Water well and it will quickly recover. I even send off growing garlic to friends and relatives and it always recovers. Not surprising garlic has been around for thousands of years, it's that tough.

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback. I`ve moved the garlic and given it a really good watering as we`ve still had no rain to speak of.
We`re not on a water meter and in the 15 years I`ve lived here we`ve never had a hose pipe ban. Keilder water was built to supply water for a massive industrial boom that never happened on Teesside so we are very lucky in our water supply.
