Potbound or risk the weather?
« on: May 05, 2011, 13:07 »
Afternoon all,

I've got some pumpkins and sweetcorn that, due to the very sunny weather, have gone a bit mad.  They seem to have grown so much bigger quicker this year.  The problem is they are now getting far too big for their pots.  So what are the problems of letting them get potbound?  Shall I leave them in the greenhouse or risk planting them out on the plot.  There's no sign of a frost at the moment here in deepest Essex, but I wouldn't noramally plant these things out until early June.  I would put them into bigger pots, but I just don't have the room  in the greenhouse (plus my youngest seems to take great joy in digging up anything you leave unattended  >:( )

Mine were the same, so I planted them out and put sun tunnels over them (plastic cloches) until the risk of frost is past. If you have no cloches, you could put 4 bamboo canes around each plant and cover them with a plastic carrier bag as protection. This works quite well as a mini greenhouse  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

there was a frost in essex on Tuesday, but with some luck it was the last.
You can either pot them into bigger pots or plant them out under a cloche/polysheeting, as leaving them pot-bound till June is not really a good idea at all :(

Have you more seed in case you plant them out and lose them

You could cover your bets by putting some out and - as others suggest -be ready to cover them if there is a frost. In the greenhouse space you freeup why not pot on the remainder into bigger pots so if you do lose some  of those you put out, at least the others are likely to be ok.

all previous postings make good sense, have you enough to plant some out with protection but hold a reserve in case of loss. Bottom line though is pot bound means some impairment , frost means death.

Thanks for all the advice.  I've ordered some extra deep plastic plant pots so I shall use them when they turn up.  I've not seen such pots in any of the garden centres that I visit.  I'm really tempted to plant them out, but we all know what will happen don't we  :)

Again thanks for all helpful advice.
