egg washing/wiping
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:27 »
I know we aren't supposed to 'wash' eggs as it makes the shell porous and the 'bugs' can get in.  I'm just wondering whether wiping over with damp kitchen roll is ok or if thats a no no too.

I tend to wipe mine over gently with a damp kitchen towell if they are very mucky.  Sometimes if it is dried on and crusted (one of my aunt's hens is an egg eater and sometimes the eggs are covered!)  I have to rub a little harder.
I was wondering about this and if it was OK so I will be following this thread with interest.

I give mine a quick wash under the tap.  I know this is controversial but sometimes a wipe is not enough.  The most we have at home is maybe 2 days worth so its a quick turn over

Some people suggest leaving the poo to dry out, then sanding it off with fine sandpaper!  It means you get rid of the muck without compromising the anti-bacterial bloom on the shell.
