Edible carrot leaf- anyone tried it?
« on: May 04, 2011, 10:22 »
This was a new one on me. Not sure I like the idea, but would be interested to know if anyone's tried it, and what the flavour is like.

Have you tasted ordinary carrot leaf/stalk? Its quite carroty. :) I'm sure you could eat it too, but I have never done so....

I sowed some last year as they were part of a mixed salad leaves packet; they grew well with all the other seeds and didn't taste overly 'carrotty' when I ate them. I do remember that the seed was easily identifiable as carrot (because it was so big compared to all the lettuces), so I reckon that you could eat the green tops of regular carrots without any problem. I only grow carrots in old flower buckets now, failed every time on the lottie.

As soon as they get their first true leaves i sow another bucket full.
I don't bother to thin them either, just pull the lot in one go.

We have the thin baby ones in salads and the bigger ones go in stews or cut into discs and cooked for on the side of the plate.

I will be trying them in the green house through winter too to see if we can get an all year round supply.

I've tried the tops before, (just a nibble) i really didn't like them they were sooooooo fragrant and left a bitter taste in my mouth, and i like Gin and tonic and bitter lemon too but they were "in my opinion" not very nice.
Each to their own though.
