celeriac germination
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:00 »
Is it usually hard to germinate?
I'm trying to grow it but from a half size seed tray, sown 9th April, I have 2 plants about an inch high and another just showing :(

Is it too late to try again? fresh packet maybe?

HELP  ;)

Our committee treasurer lost all of his this season - so perhaps it's just not been suitable growing conditions?

My Dr Hessayon says sow March - but you might get away with it?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Mine came up fine and now has been transplanted, but saying that it is a very slow grower.

Mine came up all right, but didn't survive the transplanting. I thought it was a poor batch of compost as one or two other things didn't do so well after transplanting. Maybe I'll give it another go next year
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Ours is coming up sporadically, so not fine really....  Not had this problem before.

Tried growing it for the first time. Germination was OK but then I forgot to water the little seedlings for a couple of days and lost the lot. Shall try again next year.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I sowed in small trays with clear lids (some cheap thing from home bargains, in sieved B&Q peat-free) and got good germination and they pricked out fine into asda 2" pots. Maybe a bad seed batch?

sowed mine direct to the patch in the middle of May last year - pretty much all germinated and had some good sized celeriac over the winter, so will try the same thing this year.

So I would say you've still got time to sow some more.

I've had really good germination of alot of my plants, yet very poor on the others.

The plants that germinated well were sown in seived growbag compost and the others (poor ones) in seived multipurpose compost which i found to be very strawy/twiggy.
I will be sowing some more Caulli's, Purple sprouting brocolli and sprouts at the weekend in growbag compost.

What type of compost did you use mum?
Just wondering if it could be that thats causing the poor show????

How long have you had the seed?

Thats the only other thing i can think of, like you say fresh seed and try again.
Even if they are a little late going in won't that just mean smaller roots?

If you notice though stompy, mum isn't the only one who isn't getting good germination this year. Some of us who grow celeriac regularly are also struggling a bit this year. ::)

I asume that it's grown the same as every other seed though, in a pot in a propogator or pot with a plastic bag indoors?
I don't see how the differing conditions around the country could affect it?

I don't know, just a thought.
Maybe the main supliers have got poor quality seeds in from their primary supliers.
