lettuce and beetroot protection
« on: May 01, 2011, 18:06 »
I have a raised bed with 2 rows of beetroot and two lines of lettuce. I had some fleece over them for a while but now have them uncovered. At the moment, they are being left alone - do these normally need to be netted? I know the lettuce won't like frosts.

thanks

Once established, I normally leave these two crops to get on with it on their own. :)

The beetroot will be fine and, I imagine, so will the lettuce.

Lettuce attract slugs and snails especially if it is damp. I give mine a quick sprinkle of slug bait and cover them with netting to discourage our very friendly fat pigeons. (I just don't trust them with newly planted lettuce).
