Pak Choi secret??
« on: May 01, 2011, 08:28 »
I`ve managed to beat the dreaded flea-beetle by growing mine in a row of pots, on shelves about 1 meter from the ground-it seems the beetle flies low..!! netted also against pigeons.--how do I grow nice tight plants like you buy/see on the packet, as mine all fan out, just as tasty- but is there a secret for the `picture book` end result ...??

It depends on the variety. You may have one of the really big ones. The ones in the shop tend to be the smaller, compact varieties.  Don't sow in hot, dry spells as they go to seed very easily.

The best I ever managed were planted out towards the far end of summer.

Yup, i leave pak choi sowing until after mid-summer, using the space vacated by spuds or onions

My Pak choi doesn't usually go in until July.
To quote an oft used phrase on here what does the seed packet say?

Info on seed packets is often difficult to follow. I blame the new smaller print they use these days.  :(

My specs last seen disappearing into the compost heap or in with the potatoes. Must visit Pouldland again for a new pair.   ::)

I like to make an oriental inspired salmon parcels using pak choi, any other oriental mixed leaves which I have growing (about 10 months of the year), spring onions, ginger, garlic, sweet chilli sauce, coconut milk, mini corn, mushrooms and noodles. All wrapped in a foil parcel and baked in the oven for 20 minutes at 220 degrees

Spinach if no pak choi available
