I'd go with cats as well, 1 of mine kills squirrels and never leaves a mark.

If the mice had no visible scars from a cat, then it is possible they have taken a fancy to nibbling the slug pellets and have been poisoned.

do you reckon? From what I've seen, cats treat mice like practice hunting... they'll play and pat and tease the mouse until it dies, probably of shock and exhaustion... the mice didn't appear to have been mauled in any way... but for the "real" hunting they go for pigeon-sized birds (at least my cat did), maybe a little larger, and if you're "lucky" they might bring the feet back as a trophy... our cat would wait in the long grass for the birds to fly in, and when it caught one, it would eat the bird, feathers and all!
