Chicks bashing chests
« on: April 29, 2011, 10:40 »
Is this a sign of them being males? Im hoping not as it would seem that most of them are males if this is the case  :(

Also does the 'trick' of holding them upside down and seeing who relaxes and who pecks a good way of sexing? Im not sure they'd appreciate it either way lol

female chicks will also bash chests - it is a way of sorting out the dominance thing.
Staffies are softer than you think.

My pullets still bash chests and flare their neck-feathers at each other and they're over 20 weeks old.  ::)  They pretty much have a routine of doing it every morning when I let them out of the coop.  I wonder if they will ever grow out of it.

Yes I think it is teenage behaviour.  They're all about "look at me!" and "I'm bigger/stronger/faster than you!"  and "what you looking at?!"

Maybe once they start laying they'll settle down.
