My annual coriander question
« on: April 27, 2011, 13:57 »
Its running to seed already !  >:(

In previous years I've just taken the scissors across the top of the pot, refilled and started again when its started to bolt. This year its no more than 3 inches high so Id end up with very little.

Can I give it a bit of a trim without killing the lot, is there a knack ? every time I've tried the plants haven't recovered.

I hope someone will have an answer to this as I always have the same problem.  The only variety that I have any success with is "confetti" but it's not as good.
Cheese makes everything better.

I think its just been too hot in the greenhouse for it this year.

Towards the end of last year, although it was cut and dispose of I was getting huge amounts from the smaller morrisons flower buckets which I was freezing. Not a nice as freshly picked but better than the bought stuff.

I was going to suggest too much heat, but I didn't realise you were growing it indoors and I didn't think it had been that hot yet! Mine only bolts  container-grown outdoors* when it gets too hot and dries out.

Are you growing a seed-cropping variety, or a leaf-cropping variety as this could influence things?

Leaf cropping same as last year.

I can understand why its bolted its been stupidly hot (38-40) in the greenhouse, what Im struggling with is how to harvest it without killing the plant. Is it even possible?

My second tub is only 2 weeks behind this one so its no great loss - Im still searching for most productive method of growing it.

Lardman - if they're going to seed then I guess that the foliage has already changed shape and therefor the flavour has suffered already. I'd chop them off at ground level and see what happens. Alternatlively let them go to seed and save it for next year's sowings. Like you said, you've already planted some more so it's not the end of the world if nothing happens.

I got my best corriander by planting in September. It over-wintered and has been lush up to a few weeks ago when the great heat started and it's all running to seed.
Spring/Summer plantings always bolt early for me too! :( I think they might do better in a cooler, semi-shady place so I'll try that.
