question on sweet corn
« on: April 26, 2011, 18:33 »
my corn has germinated well my first ever batch 12/12   :)

ive put them in 3x2 peat pots is it best to slit the pots before the go in or cut the bottom and sides before they go in?

also to all you veteran sweetcorners (i just made that word up) whats the earliest you would plant out with a cloche for them

well done with your germination rates, but they would have been much better planted into deeper pots cos they make a lot of roots. ( I make deep paper ones)

Ive not even started chitting mine yet, nearly did it today but still a tad early i think. But when i have chitted them they go into root trainers.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

some people do some don't but at least you can tell which seeds won't germinate, so save a bit of compost.
Here's an old link with info and pic

Flitwickone, I made Richy's paper pots to plant my sweetcorn in. I slightly modified them though, instead of using half a sheet of newspaper I used a full sheet and by doing that you get a much deeper pot, which I believe is ideal for sweetcorn. Hope this helps

Pottered, you will get very poor germination if you plant directly into the ground as most varieties of modern sweetcorn require high temperatures for germination, some 15 C soil temperature.
I did a trial for Gardening Which last year, growing the same variety of sweetcorn in pots in a propagator and planting out at the beginning of June, or direct in the ground. The ones sown in the ground had poor germination, even under a cloche, and never produced a cob before the season was over.

I'm doing them in coir pots again this year. They were amazing last year, two cobs on most of the plants.  I just soaked the pot in a tray of water before planting and made sure the tops of the pots were just below the surface. There was no sign of the pots when i pulled them up. Their just starting to poke through now still in the grow house.   :)
