rhubarb pest control
« on: August 28, 2007, 14:19 »
Hi every-one not asked anything for a long time but hope some-one can help me. We have sprayed all the brassicas with chemical pest control for cabbage white fly but still having a problem, it was a once only spray, we have heard you can use rhubarb leaves as a control, but we are not sure what to do. One way was to boil the leaves then strain and add soap flakes, thats not a problem but it says not to use the pan or utensils for anything else as it is very poisonous,  :( if thats the case, will
it poison the cabbages and such.Is there another way of making it without boiling.
Sorry for going on but we seem to fighting a loosing battle with the blighters,
JB80

I have simply put my rhubarb leaves into a water butt and left them for a while. When the water stinks it apparently ready. Watering with this stuff then becomes interesting as i want to vom all the time! Can see why the whites stay away!! Apparently this is also good for carrot fly

A physical barrier like fleece or mesh might be a better solution.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

That's what I have to use. A rhubarb spray would not keep the pigeons off!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i do both, nets to keep away the pidgeons and majority of flutterbys, and then then tea to keep the rest of the flutterbys away and to stop them landing on leaves that are close to the nets! The only problem i now have is slugs! Anyone know of an organic solution to slug eradication?

Speaking of nematodes. How often would one have to apply? I hear there's a peak period for using them, but a friend did and still has as many slugs as I do. Can anyone who uses them successfully please break down how to use them to me please?

It's the year of slugs BTW, I'll fish out the story and start a new thread rather than hijack this one..........

Slugweiser works pretty well http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=83812#83812  use in slug pubs in the usual manner.  Next batch (brewing now) has omitted the rice so will report later.
