Apple tree no signs of life.
« on: April 24, 2011, 16:34 »
I think its a coxs orange pippin.

There are buds but they don't look to be breaking, certainly the ones I can reach lower down have dried up. How long should I give it before I add it to the list of things for the bonfire? It was very old and not in the best condition.

Don't know much about fruit trees Lardy, but the blossom on ours has nearly all gone now.  Blown away by the wind!

I`ve got a cox`s pippin. Its just starting to break bud now.

I did dig it up and move its position last winter though, so assumed that was why it was late. Although I didnt get any fruit from it last year.

No blossom and no leaves yet Grannie, I know I can be a bit half soaked but I don't think I missed them  :D I remember it breaking late last year - but I just don't remember how late...

My C O Pippin blossom has set, all four of them. :)

Why plant four of the same tree?

My Gala has now lost most of it's blossom and the leaves are well out. As it is a second year pot grown plant I don't want it to set too much fruit this year.   It was expensive from trees on line but it is very healthy looking and was the only way I coiuld find a supplier with a Gala, so worth it in the end.

Scratch the bark with your thumb nail. If it is green/white underneath all is fine, if it is brown the tree is dying/dead.

Have 2 Cox's 1 elstar 1 Bramley and hardly any sign of life on them only a a couple of leaves at the ends of the branches.
I also have 1 Discovery which is bursting with blossom in the last couple of days just hope one of the others come into blossom soon to fertilise it

Only one tree with four flowers on it . :) I should have planted four.
To be fair it did crop heavily last year and is a young tree.
The James Grieve is loaded as usual.

How did your Cox perform last year?  If it cropped well it may have gone 'biennial' and not be going to flower this year.  As the flowers show a little before the leaves this might be why it looks dead.

However Cox is a  notoriously difficult apple.  If it has not been giving good crops in the last few years, or is scabby or prone to canker, I would have it out.  It will make excellent firewood.

Its very scabby and full of canker.  Its been a large tree since the old bloke next door moved in 46 years ago, so its old too but I've had nothing from it in the last 3 years.

Is it worth waiting until we have a bit of rain to see if that encourages it along ?

If it is neither use nor ornament I would have it out.

I'd wait and see - I have 5 apple trees and luckily they do all blossom roughly the same time - but I'm soft  :)
