Growing potatoes in bin bags
« on: April 22, 2011, 10:00 »
I've planted a few potatoes in bin bags a few weeks ago, covered with soil and watered them.
I know you're supposed to keep covering them up by adding more soil as they grow.

They've not got some green sprouts coming through the soil.  Do I cover these green sprouts to bury the potatoes fully, or do I wait longer and allow these green bits access to light?

Thanks! :)

I usually wait until they are a couple of inches above the soil, then just bury them. Every 3-4 days you need to repeat this until the bag is
is full. Then let them finish growing and you should have spuds. Don't forget to water loads and loads.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

And if its a bin bag, don't try to move it!  soil is very heavy and the bag would split! :(

Thanks guys!  I don't think I could move the bags if I tried!

I read that you shouldn't water spuds too much as they can rot, but I guess that's when they're in the ground rather than in bags?

Yes they will rot, but once the shoots are showing the seed spud is effectively gone anyway. Anything in pots and bags needs loads of water especially in this weather.

Providing you have remembered drainage holes as far as I'm concerned once the plants are filling the bag and are showing lots of top growth they can't have enough water. You may also want to feed them at that point as the soil / compost you have used will be somewhat lacking in nutrients.

I wait until my shoots are out of the top of the bags before "earthing up".

Although I don't reckon I get any spuds in that top earthed-up section, is that right?

Make some drainage holes in the sides around the base - and holes at the bottom, with the compost sitting on it, won't work well enough for drainage.
