The longest runner bean....
« on: August 27, 2007, 20:13 »
Hi there,

This week we popped to the lottie to find our runner beans have really grown, we had 3 beans which were 16 inches long.

How are yours? do you have one to beat 16 inches? are yours small this year? or have all your plants diesn off without forming beans? we would like to know, pictures would also be great.

Other news this week is swedes forming, pumpkins galore, straberry runners and continuing harvests.

Regards

I am currently holding a 14 incher.

However most of the big pickings were done yesterday and have since been sliced and frozen.

I will try and compete!

A couple of mine were about a foot long, but I normally pick them well before they get to that length.
Can you still eat a 16-incher??

Fred Hayton grew one that was 26.75 inches long, but I don't know if that's the record

http://www.aberford.net/2003/09/fred-hayton-and-his-longest-runner.html

I never measure mine.  They are usually picked when smaller anyway, and any that grow too long, get chopped up and frozen for winter stews.

Mine started off slow this year and were very spindly on the bottom foot or so, but the tops are really thick now, especially the 'leftovers' that I planted in the polytunnel.  Loads of beans coming on them.  They were planted a couple of weeks later than the outdoor ones

Don't worry Digger Dave, smut attacks sweetcorn not runner beans.
