Autumn raspberry runners
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:46 »
My autumn raspberries are really well established now but are exceedingly invasive. Any tips for how to deal with the runners which are coming up where they are not wanted and going under paths etc so getting the roots up is difficult if not impossible.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I had a large piece of black pond liner left over from making my pond and buried a length of it vertically to a depth of about 18" and about 2' away from the row to form a continuous barrier.

Up to now it has worked (raspberries are fairly shallow-rooted) - I believe some people have used things like corrugated plastic to do the same job.

I could only do it one side of the row unfortunately as I have a path the other side and yes, they sucker up beyond the path as well (just have to hoe them off when they appear.)

(My current record for a raspberry sucker is about 10' away from the nearest plant!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I grow mine in large containers. Runners are dug out, potted on and given to anyone who wants them (I've run out of room).  :)
