Mesh fences against wind
« on: April 17, 2011, 00:16 »
A plot neighbour handed me about 8 x 16 yards of fine nylon mesh and suggested I construct a three foot high wind break fence around my plot to create a milder microclimate.

While this sounds like a great idea, it would restrict access to my plot from the communal paths, I would have to create a perimeter path around my plot to get to all beds which would decrease my growing space.

Possibly my plants would fair better in the milder microclimate, but would there be a significant difference and would it be worth the effort?

Has anyone tried this and can share their experience? i notice it seems to be popular on my site but the site isn't all that windy.

I've done fencing to cut down on winds in spring and it works well. If you face an uphill wind you might have to leave it up all summer but in early summer I took mine down as it was no longer needed. Wind can be brutal and dessicate young seedlings even if they're hardened off.

Zippy, you'd best look around your site and talk to others about why so many have fencing up. It could possibly be for more than just wind (roaming children, pets, etc)
