courgettes and the propagator
« on: April 15, 2011, 08:00 »
Now that the seeds have germinated and are popping up to the light,do I need to keep courgettes/melons/cucs in the heated propagator?I only have a small one and have other seeds waiting for the space  :)

No, just frost-free should be fine for the courgettes and cucumbers. I can't comment on growing melons.

Yeah they will be huge - thats the problem in starting things off too early. Id have left them a bit longer personally. Good luck though

I think Frost Free is too cold for Cucumbers (well, maybe not for Cucumbers that are destined to go outdoors? I only grow them in the greenhouse)

Ditto for Melons.  I give both those 10C minimum.

Dunno about minimum temperature for Courgettes, I don't start mine until last week of April, they will only be 4 weeks until they are ready to plant out. I hold some back in 1.5L pots until mid June to avoid any chilly weather at the start of June. Will do half-and-half this year to see if it makes any difference.

I felt it would confuse the issue if I said that ours are in an unheated polytunnel day and night right now, but I don't know how the questioners climate compares to ours here. So re-phrase frost-free to somewhere safe from frost.
