Identifying Trees (Tree 2 + 3 Added)
« on: April 13, 2011, 17:58 »
I'm trying to identify the trees in the garden of our new house. There's a lot of them I'm afraid and I got a book from the library but it has 100's of trees in it and I'm not having much luck. If I posted some pictures I was hoping someone could help identify them.

Tree number 1

Sorry one of the pictures is dark.

The leaves and flowers look like a rowan (mountain ash) to me.  It has pretty berries in the autumn.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks, I just looked up Rowan in the tree book and it does look like it. It's much easier when you know what you're looking for  :D
Would you mind if I post some more pics at the weekend to identify some more?

Hmm, you don't happen to have a recipe you could share for that do you?

1.8 kg (4lb) berries stripped off stalks (use a fork)
2/3 tablespoons lemon juice
sugar

Put berries in preserving pan with enough water to cover. Simmer for about 15-20 mins until soft. Add lemon juice. Strain through jelly bag for several hours or overnight (I use an old pillow case tied up with string suspended on a bit of wood between two chair backs and drips into a clean bucket or bowl)
Measure the juice into the cleaned preserving pan. To every 600ml (1 pint) add 350g (12oz) sugar. Stir over gentle heat til sugar is dissolved then bring to boil and boil rapidly until setting point is reached (I use a cold plate to drip a bit on and if it wrinkles when prodded it's ready)
Cool slightly then pour into warm jars and cover. Store in cool dark place to keep the colour.
Brill with cheese roast meats or even on toast. Unique sharp flavour.

Field Maple - leaves bluntly 5-lobed, untoothed, red when young (I see a young one tinged with red round the edges), yellow flowers in erect clusters. Grows to 20m  ;)

Thanks, here's another one - This one might be harder to identify as it looks bare with no leaves at the moment. Close up there are buds on it. It stands out in front of the other trees.
